A Message from NJCU President Andrés Acebo in Observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 20, 2025
I Have A Dream

Dear NJCU Family,

Today, we pause in remembrance of a young prophetic leader, a man in his 30s, who carried the weight of a dream so profound it changed the course of history. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a figure now etched into the fabric of our nation, was not a mythical giant, but a human being — a son, a father, a husband — whose vision transcended his flaws, stumbles, and the ridicule of his time.

Dr. King dared to stand at the pulpit of history and proclaim that the world could be better — that the weary soul of humanity could find rest in justice, equality, and peace. This courage was not born of perfection, but of conviction. He once described a love greater than ourselves, agape, as “an understanding, creative, redemptive goodwill for all.” It is this selfless love that empowered him to endure threats, jail cells, and the bitter sting of oppression.

Imagine him now — not the icon we revere today, but the young man he was: his voice trembling but resolute, his eyes blazing with hope. Picture him walking into rooms filled with skepticism, standing before congregations unsure if his dream was too bold, too audacious, too impossible. Yet he pressed on, calling us to believe that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Dr. King’s life reminds us of the power of encouragement, of what can happen when someone dares to share their dream, even when others seek to diminish it. At NJCU, we are a community of dreamers, leaders, and change-makers. Let us honor his legacy not only by remembering him but by living his teachings — by lifting one another up, by confronting injustice wherever it lives, and by loving with the kind of boundless, redemptive goodwill that transforms lives.

On this day, let us commit ourselves to bending that arc just a little further toward justice. Together, let us build a world worthy of the dreams yet to be spoken.

Yours in service and in solidarity,

Interim President
